Behind the Scenes with the Hancock Group

An Interview on Ethical Real Estate and Fashion.

At Andrea Biani, we’re passionate about celebrating local businesses and their leaders. Today, we're thrilled to present an exclusive interview with the Hancock Group, a boutique real estate agency in Christchurch. We sat down with the team to discuss their mission, challenges, and how fashion intersects with their professional lives.

    Title

Can you tell us a little about the history and mission of the Hancock Group?

"Our mission is to provide a service where we guide and advise our clients according to their needs. We offer a tailored experience where our clients feel valued and heard. I didn’t used to feel proud to say I was a real estate agent due to people's negative experiences, which contribute to the general perception of agents. We want to change that, starting with empathy, transparency, and trust."

What inspired you to start a boutique real estate agency, and what sets the Hancock Group apart from other agencies?

"I felt there was space in the market for a boutique agency rather than a franchise. We have attracted agents with the same values and a fresh approach; one thing we all have in common is our ability to connect with people. For me, it was about building a culture from the top where agents feel supported and motivated. We have an open database which fosters trust and gives our clients greater reach while enabling our agents to work collaboratively."

How does being a female-led business influence your approach to real estate?

"All our agents have empathy and are very self-aware, which allows us to read a room and pick up on buying signs. We are all good listeners and genuinely interested in our clients’ journeys, helping build rapport and trust."

What are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced as a female entrepreneur in the real estate industry, and how have you overcome them?

"The biggest challenge at the start was wearing all the different hats needed to run a new brand."

How do you see the real estate market evolving in Christchurch, and what opportunities does this present for local businesses?

"I see Christchurch growing in desirability with more affordable living, easy access to different suburbs, and a vibrant, growing city. Technology will aid our processes, but personal customer service will remain the same. We are the local experts for St Albans, Strowan, and surrounding suburbs and hope to work alongside local businesses to support each other's success."

What made you decide to partner with Andrea Biani for a giveaway to celebrate your office space opening?

"It was a no-brainer. Andrea Biani is a brand we love, positioned in the suburb where we all live and focus our selling efforts."

How do you think fashion and real estate intersect?

"When you look good, you feel good, and you can do good."

Can you share any stories or experiences where fashion and personal style have played a role in your professional life?

"I like to mix quality pieces with basics. I wear suits with sneakers or a monochrome outfit with a fun shoe. As long as you feel good in what you’re wearing, it doesn’t matter."

What are some of your favourite shoe styles from Andrea Biani, and how do they complement your work attire?

"Malia loves her knee-high boots in a wine colour, pairing them with a long-sleeve dress. Alyssa loves the white leather Superga for a clean and comfortable look. Mere loves the slingback style heel."

Who are some local female business leaders or entrepreneurs in New Zealand that inspire you?

"Emily Mahon, who owns The Style Collective, doesn’t just furnish a home but stages the space, elevating its desirability. Olivia Wheelans, who owns Grounded Pilates, has created an aesthetic studio with lots of light and a warm team of women instructors who motivate us to move our bodies and make conscious health choices."

What advice would you give to other women looking to start their own business?

"My advice would be to simply start. Everyone has great ideas and the potential to succeed. Make a plan and have people around you who inspire you."

How do you balance running a successful business with other aspects of your life?

"It is a constant juggle, but it helps when you love all aspects of your life. I try to be present in the moment. I always make sure to have one day a week allocated to my son and ensure there are a couple of hours of quality time in the evening before bed, then it's usually back on the laptop."

What role do you think fashion and personal style play in empowering women in business?

"I have always thought of fashion as an extension of what you’re putting out to the world."

Can you share any upcoming projects or goals for the Hancock Group that you’re excited about?

"We have clients who love buying projects. We help find properties with upside potential, assist with specifications, and establish end values. A goal is also to open a second office within a year in another location."

How does personal style influence your confidence and success in the real estate industry?

"I hope my style reflects my personality and that I look professional and approachable."

What is your go-to shoe style for a busy day of meetings and property showings?

"A black or beige pump—classic and easy to slide off and on."

How do you stay updated on the latest fashion trends, and do you have any favourite fashion tips for professional women?

"My advice would be to find quality classic pieces instead of following trends. Purchase good basics and layer with personality, like a colourful shoe or a tailored blazer."

How do you think local fashion businesses like Andrea Biani can support and inspire women in other industries?

"By offering a diverse range of styles and sizes, there is something for everyone."

What are some ways you incorporate local fashion into your professional wardrobe, and why is it important to you to support local designers?

"There are so many talented local designers. It’s lovely to purchase and showcase their pieces."

If you could choose one pair of shoes from Andrea Biani to represent the Hancock Group, which pair would it be and why?

"The Victoria Beige sneaker, because just like sneakers, we are reliable and versatile, Plus sneakers can be dressed up or down!"
